Receive a study grant in secondary or college and university education

Summary

The study grant is a financial aid granted by the German-speaking Community to pupils and students enrolled in secondary or higher education. To obtain it, you must apply for it every year and meet various conditions, including financial and educational requirements.

Conditions

The Ministry of the German-speaking Community processes the applications:

  • of pupils/students attending secondary or higher education in the German-speaking Community;
  • students who are studying at a university or higher education institution abroad and who are resident in the German-speaking Community.

Study grants in the university and higher education system are granted for first degree studies. 
Specializations are excluded from the right to study grants.
The applicant may be paid a study grant if the income to be taken into account (global taxable and separate taxable income of the applicant) is below the specified maximum rate. The maximum rate and the amount paid out depends on the number of persons to be charged. The current maximum rates can be found under "Further information".

Benefits

Study grants are income-related and are paid out once per school year.
The amount of the grant in the secondary school system is between:

  • 59 € to 259 € if the student is an external student;
  • 176 € to 777 € if the pupil is enrolled in a boarding school or rents a room.

The amount of the grant in the university and college system is between:

  • 362 € to 1,205 € if the school is located in the place of residence;
  • 482 € and 1,385 € if the student travels to school every day and the school is not in their place of residence;
  • 783 € and 2,469 € if the student lives in a boarding school, student residence or rented accommodation and pays rent.
Procedure

The applicant submits their application on time and the application is checked for completeness.
Missing documents will be requested from the applicant.  As soon as the application is complete, it will be processed.
The reply letter is then sent by post. 
If the application is approved, the study grant is then paid out.

Coût

Applications in paper form must be submitted by registered mail.

Délais

Applications for study grants must be submitted by October 31st of the relevant school year at the latest.
If the application is complete, the applicant will receive a reply by April 1st of the school year in question.

Documents à fournir

Each applicant must submit a completed application form (online or in paper form).
The following documents must be submitted:

  • a full copy of the tax certificate issued by the Ministry of Finance from the student's legal representative (father, mother, guardian, etc.),
  • in case of receipt of integration income, sickness benefit or unemployment benefit: a certificate stating the amounts, period, etc.

Additionally for college and university students:

  • a copy of the student's bank card,
  • a complete copy of the student's tax certificate issued by the Ministry of Finance,
  • a certificate of enrollment issued by the student,
  • if applicable, a copy of the student's rental agreement,
  • if applicable, a certificate of enrollment from siblings who are studying at a university or college.
Voie de recours

If the applicant does not agree with the decision taken, he may lodge a complaint with the Ministry of the German-speaking Community, Department of Education and Teaching Organization, Gospertstrasse 1, 4700 Eupen.
The complaint must be substantiated and submitted by registered letter within 30 days of receipt of the reply.
