1. Registration tax:
As the owner of a motor vehicle that is intended for use on public roads, you must pay a registration tax. This is a one-off tax, which is payable when the vehicle is put into use on the public roads in Wallonia.
The tax applies to any type of new or second-hand vehicle (cars, motorbikes, planes, airships, etc.).
The engine power, which is expressed in horsepower (HP) or in kilowatts (Kw), determines the amount of tax. This amount decreases with the age of the vehicle.
When the engine power corresponds to different amounts, depending on whether it is expressed in horsepower or kilowatts, the higher amount must be taken into consideration.
Registration tax includes an eco surcharge. The amount of the eco surcharge is calculated based on the CO2 emissions of the vehicle, which are expressed in g/km above 146g.
2. Road tax :
Each year, you must also pay a road tax. This is based on the engine power, which is expressed in horsepower (HP), cylinder size or the maximum authorised mass (MAM) of the vehicle.
If your vehicle is (fully or partially) powered by LPG , an additional road tax applies.
