Summary
There are two types of accreditation for escorts:
- Type 1: allows the escort of exceptional transport requiring only an accompanying vehicle;
- Type 2: allows the escort of any exceptional transport (requiring several accompanying vehicles).
To become a certified escort:
- Type 1: you must take a theoretical skills exam;
- Type 2: you must take a theoretical skills exam AND complete an internship with an accredited escort company.
The internship
Anyone who has passed the theory exam must complete an internship with an accredited escort company to become a Type 2 escort.
This internship includes:
- five hours of observation in the driver's cabin of the exceptional vehicle during exceptional transport requiring an escort of at least two escort vehicles. The objectives of the observation are:
- to understand the difficulties involved in driving exceptional transport and perceive the various risks facing exceptional transport;
- to observe the different manoeuvres performed by the driver;
- to practise the driver's eye technique by taking into account the blind spots.
- Ten hours of actual practice as an escort during an exceptional transport requiring the accompaniment of at least two escort vehicles under the supervision of and alongside a guide escort;
- Over a total distance of 100 kilometres, excluding motorways and roads divided into four or more traffic lanes, of which at least two are reserved for each direction of traffic and where the maximum authorised speed is more than 70 km/h, the carrying out of route recognition for at least one exceptional transport requiring at least two escort vehicles.
Route recognition includes:
- preparation of the route;
- checking the presence of construction sites and obstacles;
- reconnaissance of the terrain with photos and measurements;
- checking the application file;
- writing additional notes for the driver and escorts of the convoy.
The trainee keeps a "progress of the internship" form which must be sent to the administration.

The cost of an identification card is €29.
