Summary

Operating this type of establishment requires a licence issued by the Gambling Commission and an opinion from the mayor.

In Belgium, a licence issued by the Gambling Commission (CJH) is required in order to organise gambling or betting at an establishment.

The CJH may grant or refuse seven types of licences.

In detail

Procedure

To apply for a licence, you must send a signed form to the Gambling Commission along with the relevant documents. The procedure is described on the Gambling Commission’s website.

The documents you will need include:

  1. An opinion from the mayor confirming that all the legal conditions are complied with. This opinion must be the original version, signed by the mayor and stamped with the municipality's seal.
  2. An opinion from the Federal Public Finance Service and the regional tax administration confirming that all established and undisputed tax liabilities have been settled (for a maximum of 3 months) – request certificates via fiscalite.wallonie@spw.wallonie.be (Walloon Region).

Cost

In principle, this procedure is free of charge. However, you should contact the municipality concerned for more information about this. If the procedure entails a fee, the available payment methods may differ depending on the municipality: cash, card, bank transfer, or electronic payment if the municipality has an e-counter.

Deadlines

This procedure must be completed before your establishment opens. Contact the municipality concerned to find out the exact timeframe.
