Sports

of all kinds are played in Wallonia, and the region's professional sportsmen and sportswomen excel in a wide variety of disciplines: automobile sports, combat sports, team sports, swimming, fencing, golf, cycling, athletics, etc.
Do you know the typically Walloon sport, which is derived from the game of royal tennis and is still played on the squares of our villages? It's called balle pelote.

Tennis

Justine Henin-Hardenne has worked long and hard and has now reached the pinnacle of world-class tennis, and the Rochus brothers have struck for glory in match after match.

Table tennis

Table tennis has found a real champion in Jean-Michel Saive. In April 2003, he won the European championships for the fifth time with his team La Villette de Charleroi!

Football

The most popular sport in Wallonia is still football, and Division 1 clubs like Standard, Mons, Mouscron and Charleroi have countless loyal supporters in Wallonia. In the many clubs in the four corners of our region, young boys learn the skills of the old game and dream of following in the footsteps of their idols: Walter Bassegio, the M'Penza brothers, Marc Wilmots…

Basketball

Walloon basketball has a loyal following who come to cheer on their favourite teams in the Belgian Cup tournament: the Spirou of Charleroi, Gilly and the clubs in Liège and Mons.

Competitions

Many other competitions are organized in Wallonia: two classic cycle races (the Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Walloon arrow), car rally races (Francorchamps and the Bianchi Rally), motocross (the Namur grand prix), waterpolo (the Charleroi North Sea Cup) and fencing (the international Jean Coibion tournament)…
